First Day Seeing Theo

I sat on the couch

            holding Theo

As he drifted off to distant lands

far beyond where I can see

I remember my Dad’s last days

He came and went

            to faraway places

My thoughts turn to

            here   and there

We’ve all been to both

But sleepy earth eyes

            can’t see anymore

When do spirit and soul

            enter the body?

Is it when the first cell divides?

            later?

And where was it, right before?

All the great religions of the world

            tell us the answer

But if one is right

 the rest are wrong.

Welcome Theo to this dry place

            that we call earth.

As you fly past the stars

remember that you have been called here.

We think that we must teach you

            and we will.

But maybe you’ve come to teach us.

Fly close to moons and planets

            go far beyond the stars

Fly to distant places

            hidden deep from us,

to distant dreams

we’ve lost in today

And remember your calling

Remember where you’ve been

And remember who you’ll be

as we bow to your wisdom.
