Daffodil
I was trapped in a prison of darkness
when a sudden yearning yanked on me.
I burst into what seemed like heaven.
A magical world of light and color
beckoned my petals to open.
I stretched with all my might
and tried to touch the sun.
It’s warmth was intoxicating.
I had found a home
beyond mud and muck.
Surrounded by family
and overwhelmed with joy
we sang together
a harmony in yellow.
But now dark clouds empty
in such a sudden deluge
that I choke on a déjà vu of dirt.
A spade may as well have sliced me
in two as it all comes back to me
and I shrivel into a bulb,
entombed in silence and solitude.
